[19:04] <+Nathaniel> Okey-dokey. I am Nathaniel Torson, COO of Jabberwocky Media LLC. Currently we have 5 things in the works, but I imagine everyone wants to know about Barbarians of Heavy Metal primarily, right (done).
[19:05] <~Dan> Anyone have any questions to get the ball rolling?
[19:05] <+Nathaniel> You can also ask me about Raaargh!!!, Aaaargh!!!, For Glory and Doctor Who RPG stuff.
[19:05] <~Dan> (I wish those first three were all one name.)
[19:05] <+Nathaniel> LOL.
[19:06] <+xyphoid_> wait, you have a game called Raaargh!!! and a game called Aaaargh!!!
[19:06] <+xyphoid_> do you get them confused often
[19:06] <+Nathaniel> We love somes us some onomatopoeia.
[19:06] <+Nathaniel> And no. One is giant B-Movie Monsters and the other is Pirates.
[19:07] <~Dan> And what sorts of games are those?
[19:08] <+Nathaniel> Raaargh! is an iOS game where you are a mad scientist who is controlling a giant monster through the use of an electronic device implanted directly in their brain, the Prod.
[19:08] <+Nathaniel> You control the monster with comands that the beast may or may not obey. If they disobey, you have to shock them to correct them.
[19:08] <+Nathaniel> So its as much resource management as anything.
[19:08] <~Dan> The Prod should be attached to the back of the optic nerve.
[19:09] <~Dan> So you could call it the EyeProd.
[19:09] <+Nathaniel> I'll remember that!
[19:09] <+Vapor> Poor monsters..
[19:09] <~Dan> :D
[19:09] <+Nathaniel> It's set in the 60's, so very Bond-villain meets Godzilla.
[19:09] <~Dan> Feel free to use that. :)
[19:10] *** Vapor: ~Silverlio@1EA4EAE4.5F44F890.F2439BD4.IP

[19:10] *** Sign on time: 4 hours ago at 2:53 PM
[19:10] *** Vapor End of /WHOIS list.
[19:10] <+Nathaniel> Aaargh!!! is a board game that will be converted into an app game later. It is a resource management game where you have a set number of pirates and supplies. THe turn system is also the movement system in that the round determines the position of the ships.
[19:11] <+Nathaniel> Very unique, a hell of a lot of fun.
[19:11] <~Dan> Sounds like it. :)
[19:11] <+Nathaniel> For Glory is the Barbarians of Lemuria board game.
[19:12] <+Nathaniel> And Barbarians of Heavy Metal is a BoL base RPG being developed as a 'Gameslate:' a comepltey digital TTRPG.
[19:12] <+Nathaniel> Think the old D&D boxed set with all the bits and bobs that go with it in one App.
[19:12] <~Dan> Huh. Has that been done before?
[19:13] <+Nathaniel> BoHM's setting is a cross between Battletech 3025 (before the clans, when it was best), Brutal Legend and Heavy Metal Magaxzine.
[19:13] <+Nathaniel> The Gameslate? Not that I know of. I've been working on the concept for a few years, maybe you remember some of my posts on the subject.
[19:14] <+xyphoid_> Do you do your own ios development?
[19:14] <+Nathaniel> Yes. The Gameslate will be for Android as well.
[19:15] <+Nathaniel> Raargh!! is only iOS because to get the Android bridging frameowrk, I'd have to pay about a million dollars. Seriously, I'm not exagerrating.
[19:16] <+xyphoid_> interesting - so the whole game runs off one tablet? or do you use multiple devices?
[19:16] <+Nathaniel> Which one, Raaargh!!! or BoHM?
[19:16] <+xyphoid_> BoHM
[19:17] <+Nathaniel> You can run the entire game from a single tablet or you can GM (or MM, for Metal Master ROCK & ROLLLLLLLL!!!) and the players can use a smaller phone app, or everyone can use tablets. There will be two versions: a player's version and a full version.
[19:17] <+xyphoid_> take my money now
[19:17] <+Nathaniel> Ok.
[19:17] <~Dan> :D
[19:18] <~Dan> That's a really cool idea,
[19:18] <~Dan> .
[19:18] <+xyphoid_> yeah I've been interested in that kind of thing since Spaceteam blew my mind
[19:18] <+Nathaniel> The demo of BoHM is due out this summer when we will Kickstart the full version (where you are quite welcome to shower us with money) and provide the base rules as art-free text.
[19:19] <~Dan> So there won't be print or PDF versions at all?
[19:20] <+Nathaniel> Nope. Not outside a small artless PDF. The whole point is to say to the RPG industry 'Hey! Wake up! It's the 21st century and you can't even bookmarkl your PDFs correctly!' That said, one of the stretch goals might be a print book.
[19:20] * ~Dan nods
[19:20] <+Nathaniel> The artless PDF will be dirt cheap, by the way. 99 cents.
[19:21] <+xyphoid_> can you mix android and ios clients
[19:21] <~Dan> The Artless PDF would be a good tavern name, by the way.
[19:21] <+Nathaniel> Nope. They won't play nice.
[19:21] <+xyphoid_> darn, my game table is like 4 android 2 ios
[19:22] <+Nathaniel> But, saying that, as it is a TTRPG, you really don't need to. The abiulity to fling messages, damage, etc. back and forth over wireless is neat (and avaialable for same systems), but nto ultimately necessary.
[19:22] <+Nathaniel> Look at the advantages though...
[19:23] <+Nathaniel> 1. Fully digitized everything - character sheets, equipment handling, titan battles, sonic wizardry, starship conflict, everything.
[19:23] <+xyphoid_> i have been thinking about doing something like this for eclipse phase for a while heh
[19:23] <+Nathaniel> 2. All in one package. Everything you need to play without need for dice, paper, etc.
[19:24] <+xyphoid_> so, any plans for licensing the tech base out for other rpgs?
[19:24] <+Nathaniel> 3. The abvility to play anywhere, anytime, including the car, a park, wherever, without lugging crap all over creation.
[19:25] <+Nathaniel> Gamesalte is custom designed around the game with a few standard programming procedures, so we'd build the versions using existing rules.
[19:25] <+Nathaniel> That is part of our busines plan for gameslate actually.
[19:25] <+Nathaniel> To allow those with no programming experience to get their games digital.
[19:26] *** ChanServ sets mode +ao egyptian egyptian
[19:27] <+Nathaniel> And to be clear. It's not as easy as you'd think. I've been working on the concept for three years, dealing with changing technologies and three different versions inclduing one that used strictly web-based programming, to come up with something that works.
[19:27] <~Dan> (Howdy, egyptian!)
[19:27] <+Nathaniel> Ir's actually been a right pain in the keister.
[19:28] <~Dan> Can you give us an overview of BoHM?
[19:28] <~Dan> (We have the "how". Let's cover the "what". :) )
[19:29] <+Nathaniel> Gladly. As I said, it is a decidedly heady mix of Battletech 3025, Brutal LEgend and Heavy Metal Magazine. It is my mid-life crisis love letter to the late 70's, early eighties of my youth.
[19:31] <+Nathaniel> It is based on a universe where headbanger society has become the underpinning force behind galactic civilization due to the creation of 'Harmonic Forks' which can, when inserted into an instrument and played correctly, can actually alter the fundamental forces of the universe by vibrating superstrings.
[19:32] *** Le_Squide has quit IRC: Ping timeout
[19:32] <+Nathaniel> It also revealed an unique power in people with XX chromosomes to see the vibrations of the strings, leading to precognitive visions and the horryfinyg effects of the thousand psychic wars, which pretty much wrecked galaxy.
[19:33] <~Dan> (Nice BOC shout-out, there.)
[19:33] *** Snoof has joined #rpgnet
[19:33] <+Nathaniel> So now, the known universe is plsit into 8 different kingdoms defined by a particular school of rock on the 'Rocktagon' the sacred symbol of musical order.
[19:33] *** ChanServ sets mode +v Snoof
[19:33] <~Dan> (Howdy, Snoof!)
[19:34] <+Nathaniel> The game combines three elements:
[19:35] <+Nathaniel> 1. Musical combat/sorcery
[19:35] <+Nathaniel> 2. Titan combat ala Battletech
[19:35] <+Nathaniel> The feudal conflicts bgetween the various houses of rock.
[19:35] <+JP> (ok, it took all my might to avoid a WYLD STALLION MAGIC RULES! shout out right there. Just saying.)
[19:36] <+Nathaniel> Well, it's not literal magic per se, but the use of SCIENCE!!!! to pluck at the four fundamental forces (Electromagnetic, Gravity, Stron and Weak Nuclear) and the four elements (Air, Earth, etc.) to generate effects that seem supernatural.
[19:37] <+Nathaniel> THe reason headbangers rules society is because musicians are naturally the best at manipulating these forces and rock is the best music to vibrate the strings.
[19:38] <+Nathaniel> I could yammer all day on the subject, so is there anything specific anyone would like to know?
[19:38] <+Omega> That thing is going to sell like crazy
[19:39] <+Nathaniel> I truly hope so. I want to retire.
[19:39] <~Dan> Could you say a bit about how you've tweaked the BoL rules?
[19:39] <+Nathaniel> Ah, yes! Now there is an interesting subject (to me).
[19:39] <+Omega> Anytime someone makes a game aimed at metalheads, they end up drowning in money
[19:42] <+Nathaniel> 1. The standard 2D6 + Attribute or Combat Ability + Career is changed. We introduce the idea of 2D6 + D8 (the Rocktohedron) + Style (musical, that is) + Combat Ability, Career or Instrument.
[19:43] <+xyphoid_> (i just finished playing brutal legend now that it's on the PC, my wife was so proud at this metal genre education)
[19:43] <+Nathaniel> THe Rocktohedron has two special effects. If you roll the sacred number of your school you get a Harmonic effect based upon the ones you choose during character creation. For instance:
[19:43] <+Nathaniel> Hand of Doom: Those around the Sabbathite feel the hand of The Adversary himself interfering with their actions. The Sabbathite gains D6 Penalty Dice that can be added to any roll from any character until the end of the scene.
[19:44] <+Nathaniel> On the other side of the spectrum, you might roll the sacred number of your opposition school and get a Discord (also chosen during chargen) like the folllowing:
[19:44] <+Nathaniel> Faeries Wear Boots: The Sabbathite is convinced that demonic gremlins in massive Doc Marten boots are interfering with their actions by hobbling gear and stomping on their feet. This roll becomes a Critical Failure automatically and cannot be rerolled or modified in any way.
[19:46] <+Nathaniel> Now, because we've changed the die types and numbers, we have had to change the base difficulty to 12 and modify it in intervals of 3, but that just gives us a lot more room for characters to expand
[19:47] <~Dan> Was the choice of d8 purely thematic?
[19:47] <+Nathaniel> Clear so far?
[19:47] <~Dan> Yup!
[19:47] <+Nathaniel> Yep. The rocktagon rules all in BoHM. The 4 forces and four elements are arranged on it. THe sacred and opposition numbers are based on a schools position on it. And I squeeze in references to it all the time.
[19:48] <+Nathaniel> It is a religious icon to the headbangers of the 31st century.
[19:49] <+Nathaniel> Here are the new careers:
[19:49] <+Nathaniel> Barbarian Beast Master Dog-o-War (Grunt, Soldier) Dok Flyboy/Space Cowboy Groupie Hashashin Hunter Inquisitor Manager Marauder (Pirate, Raider) Occultist Roadie Scavenger Shade (Scout) Thrall Titan Rider Tradesman Warlord Warp Rider
[19:49] <+Nathaniel> THe Attributes have been reskinned to be more metal:
[19:49] <+Nathaniel> Might Celerity Savvy Cool
[19:50] <+Nathaniel> As have the Combat Abiities:
[19:50] <+Nathaniel> Rumble Shred Fire Defend
[19:50] <+Nathaniel> And Secondary Attributes:
[19:50] <+Nathaniel> Fight: Might+10 Fortune: 6 Fame: Cool Freak: Saavy + 10
[19:50] *** WonderRat has joined #rpgnet
[19:50] *** ChanServ sets mode +v WonderRat
[19:50] <+Nathaniel> And you also pick a style form the following schools:
[19:51] <~Dan> (Howdy, Wondy! I was hoping you'd make it for this. :) )
[19:51] *** BPIJonathan has joined #rpgnet
[19:51] *** ChanServ sets mode +v BPIJonathan
[19:51] <+Nathaniel> Nazarite, Grim, Punk, Dedite, Sabbathite, Glamling, Ledite, Yngwie.
[19:51] <~Dan> (Howdy, Johnathan!)
[19:51] <+WonderRat> (Oh I can stick around for a minute I guess)
[19:51] <+BPIJonathan> (Howdy everyone)
[19:51] <+Nathaniel> And finally, you get to spend points in Instruments:
[19:51] <+WonderRat> Hmmm?
[19:51] <+Nathaniel> Axe Bass Percussion Vocal Other
[19:52] <+WonderRat> Everyone loves a bass player
[19:52] <+Nathaniel> Here are the languages of the Metalsphere, if you're interested:
[19:52] <+Nathaniel> Ligua Metallica, School Languages, Classical
[19:53] <+WonderRat> What is Grim?
[19:53] <+Nathaniel> A Bass in BoHM can blow your fool head off.
[19:53] <+Nathaniel> Grim is th ealternative music scene that formed as a reaction to eigthies hair metal (and is the opposition school of the Glamlkings for that reason).
[19:54] <+WonderRat> Steve Harris would kill many people then?
[19:54] <+WonderRat> oh so sorta like thrash then?
[19:54] <+WonderRat> Was curious if it was like the band Grim Reaper. :p
[19:54] <+Nathaniel> It's patron saints (every school has a sinat) is the Suicide King: think a King of Hearts playing card but with Kurt Cobain with a shotgun on one end and Robert Smith with a pistol on the other.
[19:54] <+WonderRat> or it is more like Grundge?
[19:55] <+Nathaniel> Abit of that yeah.
[19:55] <+WonderRat> ok nevermind
[19:55] <+Nathaniel> I see what you did there!
[19:55] <+Nathaniel> Dedites are Thrash and Death metal.
[19:56] <+luc> That raises an interesting point, what are some of the notable bands that (pardon if this is not quite the right term) helped inspire and add depth to the setting?
[19:56] <+WonderRat> No I just made a typo I did infact just mean grunge.
[19:56] <+AeonPhoenix> What is this, Brutal Legend?
[19:56] <+AeonPhoenix> Because I would be so down for that
[19:57] <+Nathaniel> Brutal Legend if it rogered Battletech 3025 while reading Heavy Metal Magazine.
[19:57] <+WonderRat> Is Sabbite just early/trad metal or more just Doom Metal
[19:57] <+Nathaniel> Let me spell out the schools and their respective Patron Saints to elucidate:
[19:57] <+Omega> It sounds absolutely crazy
[19:57] <+WonderRat> alright
[19:58] <~Dan> +
[19:58] <+WonderRat> I sorta stepped in late. If you are repeating things I can just look at a log
[19:59] <+Nathaniel> 1. Nazarite: Christ rock. PAtron SAint is th eArch-angel Gabriel and they are in opposition with Sabbathites.
[20:00] <+Nathaniel> 2. Grim: The alternative music scene including the Cure, Nirvana, etc. Patron Saint The Suicide Kings (think a King of Hearts playing card but with Kurt Cobain with a shotgun on one end and Robert Smith with a pistol on the other)
[20:00] <+WonderRat> :( Awwww
[20:00] <+Nathaniel> 3. Punk: Exactly what is sounds like. Patron Saint - The Rotten One (Johnny Rotten).
[20:00] <+WonderRat> This does sound fun though
[20:01] <+Nathaniel> 4. Dedites: Thrash, Death, Power Metal. Patron Saint - the Cowboy from Hell (Dimebag Darrel with a panther)
[20:01] <+WonderRat> <3
[20:02] *** Anduwaithe has joined #rpgnet
[20:02] *** ChanServ sets mode +v Anduwaithe
[20:02] <~Dan> (Howdy, Anduwaithe!)
[20:02] <+Nathaniel> 5. Sabbathites, basically Balck Sabbath style music. Heavy on the satanic imagery and songs of pervading menace and doom. Patron Saint - The GReat Oz, AKA The Prince of Darkness (Ozzy holding the headless body of a bat in one hand and a headless dove in another).
[20:02] <+Anduwaithe> (Hi Dan)
[20:03] <+WonderRat> (the Dedites enimies with anyone?)
[20:03] <+WonderRat> Most of em sound cool so far
[20:03] <+AeonPhoenix> Sabbathites prolly listen to Electric Wizard
[20:03] <+AeonPhoenix> I would either go Dedites or Sabbihites
[20:04] *** Le_Squide has joined #rpgnet
[20:04] *** ChanServ sets mode +v Le_Squide
[20:04] <+Nathaniel> 6. Glamlings, all the hair metal and glam rockers like Kiss and Motley Crue. Patron Saint - The Four-fold one (think a seraphim with the four faces of the members of kiss on one head).
[20:04] *** ChanServ sets mode +ao Le_Squide Le_Squide
[20:04] <+WonderRat> Me too so far, but I love Zepplin so I wanna hear them
[20:04] <+AeonPhoenix> ....ohhhhh
[20:04] <+Nathaniel> You're in luck. nexct up:
[20:04] <+AeonPhoenix> Darn it Zep is the combo breaker
[20:04] <+xyphoid_> so these are all PC groups?
[20:04] <+xyphoid_> i was sad by the goths being the antagonists in brutal legend
[20:04] <+Aeolius> ( admittedly, I never understood the whole D&D/Metal connection, and I've been gaming since '79 )
[20:05] <+WonderRat> Heavy Metal fans are nerds quite often I think
[20:05] <+AeonPhoenix> xyphoid: Well they're goths...
[20:05] <+J_Arcane> Neeeeeeeerds!
[20:05] <+AeonPhoenix> Also come on you can't take a game like that seriously
[20:05] <+Anduwaithe> JA: XD
[20:05] <+Nathaniel> 7: Ledites, blues infused hard rock like Led Zepplin, including rock with mystical or fantasy themes, like Jethro Tull. Patron Saint - THe Hermitic Twins (Plant and PAge as hermetic twins).
[20:05] <+xyphoid_> i took it DEADLY SERIOUSLY
[20:05] <+AeonPhoenix> Well stop it, man
[20:06] <+AeonPhoenix> ....I think i would still lean Dedite or Sabbithite
[20:06] <+AeonPhoenix> But maybe I would be friends with some Ledites
[20:06] <+AeonPhoenix> xD
[20:06] <+Nathaniel> 8. Yngwie, the Beethovens of rock. Opposed to Dedites because they pursue absolute precision ofver raw power.
[20:06] <+Nathaniel> Patron Saint, well, do you need to ask?
[20:06] <+AeonPhoenix> ....nah
[20:06] <+AeonPhoenix> xD
[20:06] <+AeonPhoenix> I've heard of him
[20:07] <+WonderRat> Yeah I would be Dedite or Sabbahite
[20:07] * +AeonPhoenix high fives
[20:07] <+Nathaniel> So those are the 8 schools of rock. The schools are not just musical martial arts schools, either, but a way of seeing and interacting with the world.
[20:07] <+WonderRat> Honestly I think the glam folks are the only ones I would really dislike
[20:08] <+Nathaniel> An expanions will reveal that there are smaller schools of rock on th efringes of space, like the Rap or Country schools, but they are truly fringe in this universe.
[20:08] <+AeonPhoenix> Nazarite and Glamlings for me
[20:08] <+WonderRat> Where would Maiden and Priest fit in? I am thinking Sabbihite though nots sure how much devil stuff they had
[20:08] <+Omega> you actually consider rap music?
[20:08] <+AeonPhoenix> Omega; There is some good rap out there
[20:08] <+Nathaniel> Good news is: you can take any style so long as your main school is never less than any other style and you don't take opposition styles.
[20:08] <+WonderRat> Nazarites would annoy me at times.
[20:08] <+AeonPhoenix> Nazarites would piss me off :\
[20:08] <+Vapor> I like em.
[20:08] <+AeonPhoenix> Unless they actually made good music
[20:09] <+BPIJonathan> I was actually thinking about Excalibur, Lair of the Minotaur, Iced Earth or Blind Guardian.
[20:09] <+WonderRat> Who are the dedites in oppostion to?
[20:09] <+AeonPhoenix> Don't say Ledites
[20:09] <+AeonPhoenix> I'll be heartbroken
[20:09] <+Omega> AeonPhoenix: I have a musician's ear. Rap is incomplete. It's not full music.
[20:09] <+Nathaniel> Maiden and Priest? THey would be the lesser houses. Like there is a House Nugnet and a House Dio. the would represent a mix od styles.
[20:09] <+AeonPhoenix> Omega: You clearly aren't listening to the right kind of rap, then
[20:09] <+WonderRat> DIO!
[20:09] <+Nathaniel> The oppositions are:
[20:09] <+Omega> I'm a big Dio fan
[20:09] <+AeonPhoenix> ....Maiden isn't in a lesser house
[20:10] <+Anduwaithe> Dio has rocked for a long, long time.
[20:10] <+AeonPhoenix> : (
[20:10] <+Nathaniel> Nazarites and Sabbathites, for obvious reasons...
[20:10] <+AeonPhoenix> Good
[20:10] <+WonderRat> Yeah
[20:10] <+Nathaniel> Grim and Glamlings, because Alternative is a response to Glam/Hair Metal.
[20:10] <+AeonPhoenix> I'd prolly side with Grim.
[20:10] <+WonderRat> Not a fan of alternative, but I can drink to that
[20:10] <+AeonPhoenix> I can respect some of the Alternative stuff
[20:10] <+Nathaniel> Punk and Ledite, based on the same reason (Billy Idol once insulted the Zep backstage)
[20:10] <+AeonPhoenix> dawwww
[20:11] <+WonderRat> Ben Weasel didn't like Zepplin either
[20:11] <+Nathaniel> Dedite and Yngwie for the eternal conflict between MORE POWER and MORE PRECISION
[20:11] <+AeonPhoenix> meh sounds like they were being angsty f**ks
[20:11] <+WonderRat> though he is a bit diffirent then the Sex Pistols
[20:11] <+WonderRat> oh yeah you did answer that before
[20:11] <+AeonPhoenix> Dedite and Yngwie would prolly be more in friendly compettion than wanting to kill each other
[20:11] <+WonderRat> I like the neo-classical metal at times, but like a rare thing
[20:12] <+Nathaniel> It's weird how all of this stuff fits together. When I assigned the four forces and elemnts or the bonus abilities, they all clicked into place like this is an underlying natural order to the universe.
[20:12] <+Nathaniel> Sop who wants ot hear about Warp Riders?
[20:13] <~Dan> Me! Me!
[20:13] <+WonderRat> warp riders?
[20:13] <+Anduwaithe> No, me! Suck it, Dan!
[20:13] <+Anduwaithe> ;)
[20:13] <~Dan> :D
[20:13] <+Nathaniel> The underlying assumption of this universe is entirely based around manipulating universal superstrings, and the birth of the technology to dso so came about as a result of trying to figure out how to travel faster than light.
[20:14] <+AeonPhoenix> Warp Riders?
[20:15] <+Nathaniel> Warp Riders are special sorts of 'precogs' that can see the vibrations of superstrings. they are almost exclusively women, as the gene is on the X chromosome and you need two to work.
[20:15] <+AeonPhoenix> Isn't that an album by The Sword?
[20:15] <+Anduwaithe> In The Sky?
[20:15] <+Nathaniel> Yes it is. The Swiord RAWK!
[20:15] <+AeonPhoenix> BROTHER!!!!
[20:15] <+Nathaniel> And I took that very song as the basis for space travel in my game. To explain:
[20:15] <+AeonPhoenix> nice
[20:15] <+AeonPhoenix> I love Warp Riders, its one of my favorite albums by them
[20:15] <+AeonPhoenix> Alongside their older stuff
[20:16] <+WonderRat> Wish the fest year played heavier stuff. Course there is a two day heavy metal fest an hour from me so best just be happy with that
[20:16] <+Nathaniel> There are various nunnerys that raise precogs from birth. they are kept separate form the niverse for the most part and highly disciplined to avoid another interstellar war like th eThousand Psychic Wars that created the post-apocolyptic fuedla mses in the current setting.
[20:17] <+Nathaniel> They eventually become Navigatrixes on Warp Ships,
[20:17] <+AeonPhoenix> So when does the core book come out?
[20:17] <+Nathaniel> A Navigatrix, along with a backing band or choir, caues space to fold.
[20:17] <+AeonPhoenix> Cause I would like to read it
[20:17] <+Nathaniel> Give me a sec, and I'll come back to that.
[20:17] <+AeonPhoenix> heheh
[20:18] <+Nathaniel> Then she causes a discord that rips a hole in space and the ship moves in between the cvurves (sound familiar) into the hyperspace interface.
[20:18] <+Anduwaithe> She tore the Universe a new space hole!
[20:18] <+AeonPhoenix> Reminds me how hyperspace navigators work in Stardrive
[20:19] <+Nathaniel> The fold is then sent moving by the Navigatrix and the harder and faster she plays, the fast the fold moves, but because it is space and not moving through space it travels much faster.
[20:20] <+Nathaniel> THere will only be a book if Kickstarter funding pushes the amount into a certain goal. For the most part, this is a digital TTRPG.
[20:21] <+Nathaniel> But if said milestone is reached, I'll be happy to look into books.
[20:22] <+Nathaniel> For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, check this out: (Link: http://vorpalmind.blogspot.com/search/label/Gameslate)http://vorpalmind.blogspot.com/search/label/Gameslate
[20:22] <+Omega> You can set up Print On Demand with RPGNOW pretty easily. I've been ordering books through them
[20:22] <+Nathaniel> Those are all the references to Gameslate on my blog for those who missed that earlier part of the conversation.
[20:22] <+AeonPhoenix> I mean I don't think I'd ever play said game
[20:22] <+AeonPhoenix> But I love reading about that kinda stuff
[20:23] <+Nathaniel> Well, the rulebook is included in the app with all the requisite goodies but at a fraction of the cost of a print book. We're talking 10 dollars versus 60.
[20:23] <+Nathaniel> This is the strength of selling apps.
[20:23] <+Nathaniel> And you get all th eautomation to go with it.
[20:24] <+Nathaniel> Let me be clear, the RPG industry needs to adapt and this is my attempt at showing how this format will work.
[20:24] <+Nathaniel> I want to change the way we publish RPGs.
[20:25] <+Anduwaithe> :)
[20:25] <+Nathaniel> Print is way expensive for one reason. Tablets and phones are becoming more ubiquitous by the day ,for another.
[20:26] <+AeonPhoenix> Well listen, if you need any art done for your book, I'd be happy to oblige
[20:26] <+Nathaniel> It makes no sense to be arguning about pirating PDFs when the question should be 'why are we still doing poorly bookmarked PDFs?
[20:26] <+AeonPhoenix> As someone who loves heavy metal, and rock in general, the idea is pretty cool
[20:26] <+Nathaniel> I
[20:26] <+xyphoid_> the genre of this game doesn't do much for me but i'll be keeping a close eye on the tech anyway
[20:26] <+Nathaniel> Would you like to hear about musical wizardry?
[20:27] <+WonderRat> would be useable on a nook?
[20:27] <+xyphoid_> both my gaming groups have more devices than people at the table now
[20:27] <+AeonPhoenix> roll d20 looks like a great app
[20:27] <+Omega> Respecfully. You have to know your audience as well. The majority of RPG fans out there still want physical books. Not e-readers.
[20:27] <+AeonPhoenix> Yeah
[20:27] <+AeonPhoenix> I like a nice ornate book
[20:27] <+Nathaniel> formatting is a matter of writing to the native API, so yes, all we need to do is tweak the code a bit or find the right bridging framework, but for now, think Android and iOS.
[20:28] <~Dan> I would like to hear about musical wizardry!
[20:28] <+Nathaniel> I agree about books, I love the smell of a good book and the ability to quickly flip through it without needing to charge it BUT they are hella expensive.
[20:29] * +Anduwaithe likes both
[20:29] <+WonderRat> yeah I prefer books, but if an ebook will save me some cash I will go with it
[20:29] <+AeonPhoenix> But yeah
[20:29] <+AeonPhoenix> Work on releasing the content
[20:29] <+BPIJonathan> I understand the value of ebooks, but I am still a book guy.
[20:29] <+xyphoid_> plus this is the kind of thing you can extend to people who aren't buying rpg books right now
[20:29] <+AeonPhoenix> Then you can worry about a cool book
[20:29] <+BPIJonathan> and I buy a lot of ebooks
[20:29] <+Omega> Print on demand makes books accessible. Dan knows. I've bought several through RPGNOW. I'm currently waiting on one.
[20:29] *** Viktyr has joined #rpgnet
[20:29] *** ChanServ sets mode +v Viktyr
[20:30] <+Nathaniel> Like I said, if stretch goals are met, we'll do a book, but this particular game is about the format.
[20:30] <+xyphoid_> i like books but stacks of previous-edition splatbooks always feel like a waste of a tree for me
[20:30] <+Nathaniel> So, nothing's off the table, we're just really trying to come up with a cool alternative.
[20:31] *** WonderRat is now known as Rat_Away
[20:31] <+Nathaniel> Exactly, about the splatbooks. imagine everything you need to play the game in one app. No dice flying off the table, no endless paper and erasing, etc.
[20:31] <+Nathaniel> Carry it lightly anywhere. The whole kit and kaboodle
[20:31] <+xyphoid_> i am the guy who carried all my exalted and d&D books in a backpack to gaming
[20:32] <+Nathaniel> Ouch.
[20:32] <+Nathaniel> So, on to the music in the game.
[20:32] <+Nathaniel> Ther are three sets of musical interaction in the game:
[20:32] <+Aeolius> I keep meaning to finish my notes for my bard variant, sort of a mix between Loom and Aquaria.
[20:34] <+Nathaniel> 1. Gigging: Basically performing to a crowd. If using a Harmonic Resonator Instrument, you play with the safeties on. Audiences are generated on the fly and can either give you fame or rush the stage and bit the living crap out of you.
[20:34] <+AeonPhoenix> hahaha
[20:34] <+AeonPhoenix> Better not screw up
[20:34] <+Nathaniel> 2. Headcutting: Musical Duels. Can be played safeties on for just th Fame or with safeties off so you can open the ground under their feet, send them flying or just blow their fool heads off with sonic power.
[20:34] <+AeonPhoenix> nothing like an audience that knows what they want
[20:35] <+Nathaniel> 3. Sonic Wizardry: Basically, if you play long enough and skillful enough, you can alter the four forces or elements. Like magic.
[20:35] <+Nathaniel> Want to fly? Want to bring down the house, literally?
[20:35] <+Nathaniel> You can do these things.
[20:36] <+Nathaniel> With enough time and skill.
[20:36] <+AeonPhoenix> Earth, Fire, Wind and Water?
[20:36] *** Rat_Away is now known as WonderRat
[20:36] <+AeonPhoenix> Well I should say Air
[20:36] <~Dan> So is the latter akin to ritual magic? Or do you not mean that long?
[20:36] <+Nathaniel> Bands allow the 'frontman' to eceed their own skills, so a Grandmaster can do incredible things, like bringing down Titans.
[20:36] <+WonderRat> OK I am thinking of that sketch where the comidian talks about rock can altar reality. A cheese sandwich is turned into a grilled cheese sandwich
[20:37] <+Nathaniel> Yes, like Ritual Magic. Playing th esuperstrings until their vibrations build up into the effect ouyt want.
[20:37] <+AeonPhoenix> oh man grilled cheese
[20:37] <+Nathaniel> That would be a PC with 1 point in a Style using Grim to toast a sandwich. yes.
[20:37] <+Nathaniel> That is possible.
[20:38] <+Nathaniel> The system is entirely freeform and based around the specific forces and elments.
[20:38] <+Nathaniel> So grill away. A Grandmaster with a good backing band could grill an entire city.
[20:38] <+AeonPhoenix> or give everyone a hot grilled cheese sandwich?
[20:39] *** BPIJonathan has quit IRC: Disintegrated: (Link: http://www.mibbit.com)http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client
[20:39] <+Nathaniel> If they like, but how metal is it to become the grandmaster Grim Short Order Cook?
[20:40] <+Nathaniel> This conversation is making me giggle.
[20:40] <+Nathaniel> That's not very metal of me.
[20:40] <~Dan> :D
[20:40] <+AeonPhoenix> Metal Heads do tend to blend in with all facets of society. Like ninjas
[20:41] <+Nathaniel> Oh, speaking of, when using Fortune Points to activate the special effect that heal you of all your wounds, you have to liuterally shout 'I AM MORE METAL THAN YOU!!!' at the table for it to work.
[20:41] <~Dan> Can you give a full-blown example of sonic wizardry?
[20:41] <+Nathaniel> It's in th erules.
[20:41] <~Dan> LOL... That's awesome.
[20:41] <+Nathaniel> Also, here is a bit of equipment from the game for aerospace fighters:
[20:42] <+Nathaniel> THE F-BOMB A piece of air-delivered ordinance that spits profane curses out the target area all the way down. These curses are projected with subsonic carrier waves that cause extreme anger in all living beings in the target area, who must make a Cool + Nazarite or Ledite + Priest roll at Difficulty 12 or refuse to duck and cover, spending their entire next a
[20:42] <+Nathaniel> action standing and hurling profane insults back at the bomb, instead.
[20:42] <+AeonPhoenix> .....now im giggling
[20:43] <+Nathaniel> I AM MORE METAL THAN YOU!
[20:43] <+Nathaniel> I got the idea for the F-Bomb after reading an article about how cursing affects pain resistance and the human brain in general.
[20:45] <+Nathaniel> Dan, just saw your question. I'm still hammering out the specifics, but it works basivcally like th efree form magic of BoL, but each style has a particualr effect at each level, kind of like how th oWoD Mage book worked magick.
[20:45] <~Dan> I see.
[20:45] <~Dan> And you mentioned that there are psychic powers as well?
[20:46] *** Omega has quit IRC: Client exited
[20:47] <+Nathaniel> There will be an expansion that details the lesser schools of rock and introduces th eability to add Psychic Powers, real sorcery and miracles of Faith into the game. But that is a bit down the line and is compeltely optional for those who want a really gonzo version of the Metalsphere.
[20:47] <+AeonPhoenix> Nice
[20:47] <+Nathaniel> It would make it more Brutal Legend+Battletech+Heavy Metal meets Shadowrun.
[20:47] <~Dan> Yes. Because it's clearly hard scifi otherwise. ;)
[20:47] <+AeonPhoenix> ...wonder what the areas and environments are like
[20:47] <+AeonPhoenix> I mean I have an idea of what they could be
[20:48] <+Nathaniel> Incidentally, the Funk/R&B and Rap supplement will be first and will be called 'WElcome to the Muthaship.'
[20:48] <+AeonPhoenix> oh lawd
[20:48] <+AeonPhoenix> xD
[20:48] <~Dan> Speaking of gonzo, are there aliens and critters and such?
[20:48] <+AeonPhoenix> Great heavy metal beasts?
[20:48] <+Viktyr> So... how do you convince a bunch of old-school D&D fans that Classic is better than Advanced?
[20:48] <+Viktyr> Without resorting to "Classic is better because it's the one I'm willing to run."
[20:49] <~Dan> Nathaniel: I do hope the Funk/R&B school will draw upon the "Space Brother" imagery of the late 70s. :)
[20:49] <+Viktyr> Oh, sorry. Didn't see the Q&A.
[20:49] * +Viktyr shuts up.
[20:49] <+Nathaniel> No aliens in th main game, but he option to add them will be in th eMuthaship expansion (particualrly the elphant nosed aliens from all the Funkadelic albums).
[20:49] <~Dan> (No problem, Viktyr. #rpgnet2 is open for that very reason. :)
[20:50] <+Nathaniel> THe options for all the supernatural powers will be in another supplement which I think I'll call 'get your Freak on.'
[20:50] <+AeonPhoenix> haha
[20:50] <~Dan> Nice. :)
[20:50] <+AeonPhoenix> I assume you'll be describing the powers of The Funk
[20:50] <+WonderRat> There a Skynyrd/Allman Brothers Southern Rock sorta school or is they in a blues-rock school?
[20:50] <+WonderRat> er are they
[20:51] <+Nathaniel> THe Powers of the Funk are manyfold, but Sir Nose does not dance.
[20:51] <+Nathaniel> Allman brothers are blues rock, a minor subset of Ledite.
[20:51] <+WonderRat> cool
[20:51] <+WonderRat> Berry Oakley was cool
[20:51] <+Nathaniel> Now c'mon, did anyone get my Sir Nose refernce?
[20:52] <~Dan> Humpty Hump or somesuch?
[20:52] <+Nathaniel> No, that was much later.
[20:52] <~Dan> Ah. Then no, I don't get it. :)
[20:53] <+Nathaniel> Sir Nose was a perennial villain who opposed the Starchild in the Funkadelic universe.
[20:53] <+Nathaniel> He was Devoid O Funk and would never dance. He didn't much like water either.
[20:53] <+Nathaniel> Wow, I'm old.
[20:53] <+Nathaniel> But funky!
[20:53] <~Dan> :D
[20:54] <~Dan> You and me both, bro.
[20:54] <+Nathaniel> Well, speaking of, I gotta turn this mutha out, so any last quesitons?
[20:54] <~Dan> What is the overall tech level like in the setting?
[20:55] <+Nathaniel> For even more excruciatingly detailed insigth into the design process you can go here:
[20:55] <+Nathaniel> (Link: http://vorpalmind.blogspot.com/search/label/Barbarians%20of%20Heavy%20Metal)http://vorpalmind.blogspot.com/search/label/Barbarians%20of%20Heavy%20Metal

[20:55] <+Nathaniel> (Link: http://www.strangestones.com/barbarians-of-heavy-metal-design-diaries/)http://www.strangestones.com/barbarians-of-heavy-metal-design-diaries/
[20:57] <~Dan> Do you have time to answer my tech question, or do you need to run?
[20:57] <+Nathaniel> Dan, The tech level is variable. Worlds can be anything from primitive barbarians who forgot the past to modern 20th century style cities, and most have a mix. THere is lost tech, AdTek, that only the priests of the Church can maintain (although they cannot recreate it), like the harmonic resonator forks, nd that is often fought over.
[20:58] <~Dan> Gotcha.
[20:58] <~Dan> Thanks very much for coming by, Nathaniel!
[20:58] <~Dan> I'll have the log posted shortly.
[20:58] <+Nathaniel> No problem. Thanks for letting me pimp my wares!
[20:58] <~Dan> And we still need to get together for dinner. :)
[20:59] <+Nathaniel> After this semester, buddy. I'm up to my eyeballs in work.
[20:59] <~Dan> Fair enough. :)
[20:59] <~Dan> Talk to you later!
[20:59] <+Nathaniel> Cheers!
